Sage walked in from school, took one look at me and Enrique huddled around the island, and made a beeline for the stairs.

“We’re leaving for dinner at five. Be ready,” I warned her as she stomped up the stairs.

“Whatever,” she mumbled under her breath.

“I like your style,” Enrique joked.

I groaned, and rested my cheek on the cool soapstone counter. “I don’t know why I try so hard with her. She hates me. Maybe she always hated me.”

He walked around the island to stand beside me and started rubbing my back. “It’s going to be fine. Don’t worry.”

“How’s this ever going to be fine? I can’t see it. I look into the future and it’s so dark and uncertain I want to curl up in a ball and hide,” I whined.

“Then I’ll hide with you. It’ll be awesome.” He shrugged. “So, did you want to establish a game plan before Allie gets home? We can lay out a tactical strategy.”

Rolling my head to the side, I now had my chin propped on the hard surface. “This is the Marine in you, huh? You just have to have everything all mapped out. Don’t you ever just fly by the seat of your pants?”

He chuckled. “I am right now.” He moved to sit on the stool across from me. “I like having even a semblance of a plan so I don’t fuck it all up. I need to know what you expect from me, what you’ll allow. Ultimately, these are your kids and at least for now we need to work as a team, right?”

My jaw would’ve hung open, but since I had the weight of my whole head on it, there was no way that could happen. “So, we’re going to work together?” Slowly, I propped myself up on my elbows.

“I know what you’re used to. I saw it.” Enrique sighed.

I stood up. “That’s right. You were watching me. I looked for….”

He smirked. “I know. And you never found them, huh?” His brows arched and he released a playful chuckle.

Something about his way made me want to wrap my arms around him and never let go. Only I was acutely aware that I’d have to, so I held back. No need to get attached to a perfectly awesome guy I could never really have.

I blew out a breath. “You’re good. I’ll give you that.”

Polishing his knuckles against his shirt, he proudly announced, “Well, I am a professional.”

I rolled my eyes. “So, seriously, where are the cameras?”

Enrique frowned. “I can’t tell you where they are, but to ease any fears I can tell you where they are not.”

“I can work with that.” I nodded anxiously. “I mean, were you watching me sleep?”

He shook his head. “Negative. No cameras in the bedrooms or bathrooms. Privacy issues. You know.”

I licked my lips. “And listening devices?”

He reached out and stretched before answering. “You should assume that there are listening devices everywhere.”

My chin jutted out. “I thought assuming made an ass of you and me.”

“Not in this case.
